The science behind Vantrel Lumen

Red light on the lining of the nose has been studied for nearly thirty years. Here is what it is, what it does, and why Vantrel Lumen puts it exactly where the swelling sits.

Why a nose closes

The inside of your nose is lined with soft tissue full of tiny blood vessels. Pollen, pet dander, dust, a cold that lingers, or simply lying down can make that lining swell, and a swollen lining narrows the airway until the mouth takes over.

Decongestant sprays shrink those vessels for a few hours. Used for more than a few days, the lining can swell back harder than before, which is why the label says three days at most.

What red light is

Red light is ordinary visible light at the warm end of the spectrum, roughly 620 to 700 nanometres. It is not ultraviolet and it is not heat.

Vantrel Lumen uses 650 nm, the middle of that band, at a low power of 5 mW: at most you feel a gentle warmth.

03

What it does in the tissue

Every cell contains tiny energy centres called mitochondria, and an enzyme inside them absorbs red light. The effect has a name, photobiomodulation, and it is the reason red light is used on skin and hair.

It is also why researchers have studied red light on the lining of the nose, where the swelling and irritation sit.

Why the light goes inside the nostril

Skin and bone block most of the light you shine on the outside of the nose. Vantrel Lumen's two slim sleeves sit just inside the nostrils, so the light starts right at the lining.

Ten minutes a session, up to three times a day, and it switches itself off at twenty.

What the research looked at

Red light inside the nose has been studied in allergic rhinitis since the 1990s. Three of those studies:

1997

Red light for year-round allergies

A double-blind trial gave people with year-round allergic rhinitis 660 nm red light inside the nose three times a day for two weeks, or a sham light.

72% of the allergic rhinitis group reported their symptoms improved, compared with 24% on the sham light.

2013

650 nm, the same wavelength as Lumen

An open pilot study gave 42 people with year-round allergic rhinitis 650 nm light inside the nose for four weeks.

Blocked nose, runny nose, sneezing and itching all improved, and quality-of-life scores rose 45% from where they started.

Tested against a sham device

A randomised, double-blind trial compared 650 nm light inside the nose with a sham device in people with year-round allergic rhinitis.

Nasal symptoms improved significantly more in the red-light group than in the sham group.

These studies used their own devices and schedules, and results vary between studies: the research is promising and still growing. Vantrel Lumen is a general wellness device, not a medicine, and it is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition.
